Skills
Our team of data managers in DASO have a variety of skills, including but not limited to:
- Advanced Excel Skills
- REDCap – developing complex databases to support departmental clinical audits, research, clinical trials, patient reported outcome measures
- R – used to automate data imports into REDCap, data analysis and visualisation
- Python – used for data analysis
- STATA – statistical software package
- GraphPad – statistical software package
Data Sources
The team works with a variety of data sources such as:
- Independently collected surgical data stored in local departmental databases
- NSW Health Data Collections and Warehouses
- Data Warehouses – Health Information Exchange (HIE – retired in Nov 2023) and Enterprise Data Warehouse for Analysis, Reporting and Decision Support (EDWARD)
- Data Collections – Emergency Department, Admitted Patient Data Collections
- Information including diagnosis (ICD-10-AM) and procedure (Australian Classification of Health Interventions) codes
- Quality Improvement Data System (QIDS) – High priority Hospital Acquired Complications as defined by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC)
- Local electronic medical records – Inpatient reporting (Cerner Powerchart) and operative data (Surginet)

In addition to supporting surgeons, the team also receives many ad-hoc and out of scope data requests from external collaborators and executives for research and operational planning.
