Data Manager Profile: Fenglian Xu

My education, training and interests have been focused on medical science and public health.  Specifically, I hold a Bachelors Degree in Medicine (Xinjiang Medical University, China), a Masters in Medicine and Women’s Health (Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China) and a PhD in public health from Curtin University of Technology, WA.

Currently, I am a Data Manager focusing on data analysis in DASO (Data Analysis and Surgical Outcomes) Unit of Royal North Shore Hospital. Before that, I worked for many years as a research fellow and data manager in the UNSW Faculty of Medicine of (2007-2015 and 2018-2019) as well as a post-doctoral Research Fellow in the University of Technology Sydney Faculty of Health (2015-2018).

What does your role involve?

I provide data management and data analysis support and consultations to medical staff, researchers and students.  These data analyses mainly involve descriptive statistics calculations as well as hypothesis testing employing t-tests, ANOVA, chi-square tests, correlation, linear regression, logistic regression, Survival analysis (Kaplan Meier, Cox regression), General linear modelling (GLM) and generalized estimating equations (GEE). The software I use for data analysis is mainly SPSS and R.

My data management work mainly involves data cleaning, validating and linking. I have used health service datasets from the sources below for research and reporting.

  • Admitted Patients Data Collection.
  • Emergency Department Data Collection.
  • Cancer treatment data (MOSAIQ)
  • Cancer Biobank data.
  • National Death Index (NDI) data.
  • Pharmacotherapy Drugs of Addiction System.
  • Birth and Death registration data.
  • Perinatal Data Collection.
  • Research data (surgery, clinical trial and population survey data).

If you have research data and would like to create richer data sources by linking them with existing health service data or electronic health records, I am very happy to help including consultation, data linkage and analysis.

Research interests

My research interests are in the areas of biostatistics, cancer and nutrition, emergency medicine, mental health and in issues relating to breastfeeding. I have published 34 papers in peer-reviewed journals on mothers’ and children’s health (14 papers), mental health (8), cancer (6), emergency medicine (3) and methodology of linked data analysis (3).

I have been involved in eight research projects, listed below. Of these, six were based on linked health service data from NSW and WA, one based on the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health (ALSWH). My main role for those projects was data analyses.

  1. A smartphone application to support breastfeeding for Vietnamese women following caesarean section: Randomised controlled trial. NHMRC International Joint Calls (APP1155518) 2019-2020.
  2. Weight change patterns of parous and nulliparous women: a longitudinal study. Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health (ALSWH) (Project: A590) 2016.
  3. Mothers’ physical disorders and depression after birth. University of Technology Sydney Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowship.2015-2018.
  4. Validation and impact of the ‘four-hour rule’ in the emergency department: a large data linkage study. NHMRC Partnership Project (application ID: APP1029492) 2012-2017.
  5. The Australian Perinatal Mental Health Reforms: Using Population Data to Evaluate Their Impact on Service Utilisation and Related Cost-Effectiveness. NHMRC Partnership Project (application ID:APP1028554) 2012-2015.
  6. Family Mental Health and Pregnancy Outcomes (FMHPO): A Program of Population Research. NHMRC Training Fellowship (Australian Fellowship, Australian Based Public Health Fellowship, Application ID 568892), 2009-2012.
  7. Improving Birth Statistics in New South Wales, Australia through Use of Record Linkage. Grant from University of Sydney. Health Data Linkage Project, 2008.
  8. Health Evaluation Research and Outcomes Network (HERON). NHMRC Capacity Building Grants (Application ID 262121) 2004-2008.
